I teach 2-year-olds, and one day I decided to ask one of my students a few simple questions.
I knelt beside him and asked,
“What’s your mommy’s name?”
He smiled proudly.
“Michelle!”
“Very good!” I said.
Then I asked,
“What’s your daddy’s name?”
He suddenly looked confused.
He stared at me.
Then he looked at the ceiling like he was searching through his entire memory.
I tried another question.
“What does Mommy call Daddy?”
I expected something simple.
Maybe “John.”
Instead, he went completely silent.
He thought about it for several seconds.
Then he leaned closer and whispered,
“Hey… YOU!”
I burst out laughing.
“That’s what Mommy calls Daddy?”
He nodded seriously.
Then he added,
“Sometimes she says, ‘HEY! YOU! COME HERE!’”
I could barely keep a straight face.
But then he suddenly remembered something else.
He pointed toward the door and said,
“Daddy calls Mommy the same thing.”
I laughed.
“What does he say?”
The little boy shrugged.
“HEY… YOU!”
Apparently, I had just discovered the secret language of married couples.
Neither parent had a name anymore.
They were simply…
“Hey, you.” 😂
