A flashy New York lawyer was driving through a small town in West Virginia when he blew straight through a stop sign and got pulled over by a local sheriff.
Confident in his expensive suit and even bigger ego, the lawyer rolled down his window and smirked.
“Why did you stop me?”
The sheriff calmly replied,
“You didn’t come to a complete stop at that stop sign. License and registration.”
The lawyer chuckled.
“I slowed down. Nobody was coming.”
The sheriff folded his arms.
“You still didn’t STOP.”
Now completely in courtroom mode, the lawyer smiled arrogantly.
“Officer, legally speaking, what’s the difference between slowing down and stopping?”
The sheriff stared at him for a moment.
Then he slowly reached into his patrol car.
The lawyer smirked.
“You’re going to explain the law to me?”
The sheriff pulled out his ticket book.
“No, counselor.”
He walked toward the driver’s door.
“I’m going to demonstrate the difference.”
The lawyer raised an eyebrow.
“How?”
The sheriff suddenly grabbed the lawyer by his collar and gave him a quick smack on the back of the head.
The lawyer shouted,
“HEY! What the hell was THAT for?!”
The sheriff calmly replied,
“Did that hurt?”
“Of course it did!”
The sheriff nodded.
“Good.”
Then he smiled.
“Now, would you like me to SLOW DOWN… or STOP?”
The lawyer stared at him.
The sheriff handed him the ticket.
“Have a nice day, counselor.”
The lawyer drove away without saying another word.
And from that day forward, whenever he saw a stop sign…
he stopped completely. 😂
