I teach 2-year-olds, and one day I decided to ask one of my students a few simple questions.<\/p>\n

I knelt beside him and asked,<\/p>\n

He smiled proudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichelle!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cVery good!\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Then I asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat’s your daddy’s name?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He suddenly looked confused.<\/p>\n

He stared at me.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at the ceiling like he was searching through his entire memory.<\/p>\n

I tried another question.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does Mommy call Daddy?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I expected something simple.<\/p>\n

Maybe \u201cJohn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, he went completely silent.<\/p>\n

He thought about it for several seconds.<\/p>\n

Then he leaned closer and whispered,<\/p>\n

I burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s what Mommy calls Daddy?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded seriously.<\/p>\n

Then he added,<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes she says, \u2018HEY! YOU! COME HERE!\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I could barely keep a straight face.<\/p>\n

But then he suddenly remembered something else.<\/p>\n

He pointed toward the door and said,<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy calls Mommy the same thing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does he say?\u201d<\/p>\n

The little boy shrugged.<\/p>\n

Apparently, I had just discovered the secret language of married couples.<\/p>\n

Neither parent had a name anymore.<\/p>\n
