We simply realized we&#8217;d become better apart than together.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve even been letting him stay until he can afford to move out.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s one person who has never accepted me.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>She has never liked me and always made sure I knew I wasn\u2019t welcome in her family.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, she called me on my birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Not to wish me well.<\/p>\n<p>She simply said,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m glad I\u2019ll never have to buy you another birthday gift. Your husband can pick me up from the clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was silent for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then I asked,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDid he tell you that was okay?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. He&#8217;s my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the living room.<\/p>\n<p>The furniture.<\/p>\n<p>The walls.<\/p>\n<p>The house I had bought years before I ever met her son.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said calmly,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere&#8217;s just one problem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou don&#8217;t live here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she snapped,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m his mother!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I&#8217;m the owner of this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>I could almost hear her realizing where this conversation was going.<\/p>\n<p>She said she would talk to my husband.<\/p>\n<p>I told her she was welcome to do that.<\/p>\n<p>Then I added,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBut he doesn&#8217;t own this house, either.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She hung up.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, my ex came home.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing he said was,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom called you, didn&#8217;t she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me she was staying here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI figured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t agree to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>He continued,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called me earlier this week and asked if she could stay. I told her I&#8217;d need to talk to you first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she called me and pretended it was already decided?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We both laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll book her a hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#8217;t have to pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she&#8217;s my mother. And I&#8217;m the reason she&#8217;s coming to this city.
