She believed ordinary cleaning wasn’t enough.<\/p>\n
She had started using concentrated cleaning products in enclosed rooms, especially before the children arrived.<\/p>\n
She thought the stronger the smell, the cleaner the room.<\/p>\n
But she had no idea that breathing concentrated chemical fumes could irritate their airways and make their symptoms much worse.<\/p>\n
And because she wanted the children to stay healthy, she’d been doing it every time they visited.<\/p>\n
I felt sick.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou’ve been making them sick while trying to keep them healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n
She began crying.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n
I immediately took the boys outside.<\/p>\n
We called their pediatrician and explained exactly what had happened.<\/p>\n
The doctor told us to keep them away from the fumes and have them evaluated because repeated respiratory symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.<\/p>\n
Thankfully, neither child suffered permanent damage.<\/p>\n
But their doctor warned us that repeated exposure could have been dangerous.<\/p>\n
That was enough.<\/p>\n
I told my mother-in-law that the boys would not be staying there again until the situation was completely addressed.<\/p>\n
My husband was furious when he found out.<\/p>\n
Not just at his mother.<\/p>\n

Months later, my youngest son caught a normal cold at school.<\/p>\n
His grandmother immediately panicked.<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

I put my hand on her shoulder.<\/p>\n

She learned that keeping children safe isn’t about making everything smell like chemicals.<\/p>\n
It’s about knowing what can actually harm them.<\/p>\n
And I learned something too.<\/p>\n
Sometimes the person who loves your children most can still make a dangerous mistake.<\/p>\n
Love doesn’t replace knowledge.<\/p>\n
