My husband has been going on vacation with his family to the islands for a week every year for the past 12 years.<\/p>\n
He never took me or our kids with him.<\/p>\n
When I asked why, he always gave the same answer:<\/p>\n
\u201cMy mom doesn\u2019t want any in-laws on that trip. It\u2019s just immediate family. And I don\u2019t want to handle the kids alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
It never sat right with me.<\/p>\n
But year after year, I swallowed it. I stayed home, packed his bags, kissed him goodbye, and explained to our kids why Daddy wouldn\u2019t be with us again.<\/p>\n

For 12 years\u2026<\/p>\n
Twelve years of being left behind.
Twelve years of believing I wasn\u2019t wanted.
Twelve years of my children thinking they weren\u2019t included.<\/p>\n
And none of it was true.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you sure?\u201d I asked, my voice barely there.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course I\u2019m sure,\u201d she said, softer now. \u201cYou\u2019re my family. Why wouldn\u2019t I want you there?\u201d<\/p>\n
When the call ended, I just sat there in silence, staring at the wall.<\/p>\n

The deflection.
The way he never let me talk to her about it.<\/p>\n
