\u201cLadies and gentlemen,\u201d came the voice from the cockpit.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is your captain speaking. We’ll be landing shortly at JFK. I’d like to thank all of you for flying with us today.\u201d<\/p>\n
The passengers smiled.<\/p>\n
Then the captain added,<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I’d like to give a special thank-you to my wife, Debbie Brown, who’s onboard today with our three beautiful children.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The cabin filled with polite applause.<\/p>\n But one man named Louis suddenly went completely pale.<\/p>\n His jaw dropped.<\/p>\n He stared at the ceiling in disbelief.<\/p>\n He knew that name.<\/p>\n He knew those children.<\/p>\n His hands started shaking.<\/p>\n A flight attendant noticed.<\/p>\n \u201cSir? Are you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n Louis barely heard her.<\/p>\n He slowly looked toward the front of the plane.<\/p>\n Something was terribly wrong.<\/p>\n He stood up.<\/p>\n \u201cI need to speak to the captain.\u201d<\/p>\n The flight attendant frowned.<\/p>\n \u201cSir, you can’t enter the cockpit.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou don’t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n He pointed toward the front.<\/p>\n \u201cThat woman isn’t Debbie Brown.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The flight attendant froze.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n Louis swallowed.<\/p>\n \u201cI’ve known her for years.\u201d<\/p>\n The woman sitting several rows ahead turned around.<\/p>\n She was holding three children by the hands.<\/p>\n Louis recognized every one of them.<\/p>\n Then he whispered,<\/p>\n \u201cThat’s my wife.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The flight attendant stared at him.<\/p>\n \u201cYour wife?\u201d<\/p>\n Louis nodded.<\/p>\n \u201cMy wife is named Debbie Brown.\u201d<\/p>\n The woman heard him.<\/p>\n She slowly turned around.<\/p>\n Her face went completely white.<\/p>\n \u201cLouis\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n The entire row went silent.<\/p>\n Louis walked toward her.<\/p>\n \u201cYou told me you were visiting your sister this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n She couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n Then the captain’s voice came over the intercom again.<\/p>\n \u201cLadies and gentlemen, please remain seated as we prepare for landing.\u201d<\/p>\n Louis looked toward the cockpit.<\/p>\n Then back at his wife.<\/p>\n \u201cWho’s the captain?\u201d<\/p>\n Debbie finally whispered,<\/p>\n \u201cMy\u2026 husband.\u201d<\/p>\n Louis stared at her.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have another husband?\u201d<\/p>\n She started crying.<\/p>\n But before the situation could get any stranger, one of the children tugged on her sleeve.<\/p>\n \u201cMommy\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n He pointed at Louis.<\/p>\n \u201cIsn’t that Daddy?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The cabin went completely silent.<\/p>\n Louis looked at the three children.<\/p>\n Then at Debbie.<\/p>\n Then toward the cockpit.<\/p>\n And suddenly everything made sense.<\/p>\n The captain wasn’t talking about Debbie as his wife<\/strong>.<\/p>\n He was talking about her as his sister-in-law.<\/strong><\/p>\n The captain was Debbie’s brother.<\/p>\n He’d been thanking his sister and her children for flying with him.<\/p>\n Louis had simply heard the announcement and assumed the worst.<\/p>\n Debbie looked at him and burst out laughing.<\/p>\n \u201cYou thought I had another husband?\u201d<\/p>\n Louis covered his face.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought I was living through the worst nightmare of my life!\u201d<\/p>\n The captain’s voice suddenly came over the speaker again.<\/p>\n \u201cBy the way, Louis, if you’re sitting in row 14\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Louis froze.<\/p>\n The passengers started laughing.<\/p>\n The captain continued,<\/p>\n \u201cMy sister has been telling me about you for years.
